I, like many, can be leary of the $5.99′ers. You know, that big wooden bin that’s up front in the store that can give you splinters. In last weeks blog, I made some references to these wines as the “el cheapos” and perhaps having fluorescent stickers on them. Believe me when I say its all in good fun, that we don’t use gawdy colored stickers on the bottles to indicate they are from the splinter bin, and that even I can find some terrific values in there (no lie!). The other day at an industry wine tasting (one of the terrible parts of my job!), I got the opportunity to try this tasty little treat from Argentina. Oh look, I see it comes in a 3L box too! They really went all out on this display table; kudos for presentation. ”Hey Amy, how much do we sell this one for?” I ask our store manager as I prepare to taste and be dissappointed. At this price, I am most certainly not expecting much, but here goes… swirl. sniff. sipppppppp. mmmmmmmmmmmmm…WOW! Many $5.99′ers can lack in body and substance. Tannins (if any) can be harsh. NOT THIS ONE! Totally delivers on the fruit, plush body and firm tannins. Nice smooth finish too. Very impressed! Definitely worth getting a splinter for! Word is, my new secret crush is becoming quite popular around town and the 750mls are MIA. Just temporarily however. We still have the 3L box and I HIGHLY recommend it!

I use the $5 Falling Star Merlot/Malbec blend for my sangria. It’s fantastic!
